Hands are an extremely intricate and sensitive part of your body.  The intricacaies and finess of our hands are unmatched by any other organ.  It is the dexterity of our hand which controls so many things that we do.  Any person who gets even a mild loss of movement in his hand or pain can recall the severe disability that it causes.  Essentially hand problems in Orthopaedics present with a multitude of problems which may be

  • Since Birth such as trigger thumb in hand or radial club hand
  • Injury related which again may be acute or related to neglected injury
  • Age related changes arthritis of hand and fingers,
  • Sports related-
  • Repetitive activity strain such as tendon swellings and inflammation
  • Tumors such as tendons of tumor sheath or cartilage tumors in small finger bones
  • Infections such as TB

Hands are hence not immune to diseases like the rest of the human body. Injuries to hand are extremely common and vary from a totally crushed hand to small bone chip fractures. Adequate care in good time goes a long way in getting hand moving properly again. There are the other hand issues such as arthritis in hand which can causes pain and loss of movement especially arthritis of the base of the thumb which causes deformity and severe pain. There may be nerve compression symptoms in hand causing numbness and loss of sleep due to the strange feeling like the hand going dead.

We have developed Hand Surgery almost as a separate hand speciality and have now encouraged committed people in this sub speciality. We are doing dedicated work in Rheumatoid hand and other ailments such as Carpal Tunnel syndrome, other nerve compressions, Keinbocks disease, Paralytic hand, Scaphoid Non union etc which often require surgical intervention. Our team is familiar with working under magnification for fine injuries such as nerve repairs etc. in conjunction with the plastic surgery department.
